Sponsored Study Field Trip for Students with Excellent Academic Performance to Singapore

SEAMEO RETRAC in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training sponsored a group of primary school students to an exchange program in Singapore from April 09 to 13, 2012.

The sponsorship aimed at needy students from disadvantaged areas of Ho Chi Minh City who have good commands of English, possess excellent academic performance and are actively involved in schools’ activities. The study field trip included school exchange at Teck Ghee Primary School and cultural activities. During the two-day immersion at Teck Ghee Primary School, the Vietnamese students had an opportunity to make friends with Singaporeans, attended their classes and did some cultural exchange activities. Also, the group had a chance to visit most of the popular places of interest in Singapore such as: Merlion Park, Marina Barrage, Science Center, Universal Studios and so on.








Graduation Ceremony of MA - Applied Linguistics Program - Intake 06 & Intake 07 (2010 – 2011)

On September 13, 2011, the sixth and the seventh batches of students of the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics Program, jointly provided by Curtin University and SEAMEO RETRAC, celebrated their achievements.

Taking part in these intakes were 94 teachers of English from Vietnam and Indonesia. The program has so far recruited 360 candidates altogether. The eighth intake is now under way and expects to graduate in October 2012.

Japan Education Fair



Japan Education Fair co-organized by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and SEAMEO RETRAC was held at the Center’s premises on November 17, 2011.


14 well-known universities in Japan and more than 300 participants attended the fair.







International Hands-on Workshop on E-learning



SEAMEO RETRAC in collaboration with Japan’s Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) organized an International Hands-on Workshop on E-learning from January 05 to 06, 2012 at the Center.


The workshop was centered on preparing lesson plans for online teaching with learning management system (LMS) and through social networking site. The workshop drew the participation of 54 teachers from Cambodia, Lao PDR., Myanmar and Vietnam.







Trainer-training Workshop on Life Skills



Three modules of “Trainer-training Workshop on Life Skills” for university/college lecturers, student affairs, youth and students union staff were conducted at SEAMEO RETRAC respectively on December 19-23, 2011, February 06-10 and March 12-16, 2012.

The series of workshops aimed to infuse participants with needed life-skill teaching methods, provide guidance on how to design and organize life-skill practices in a comprehensible manner. Attending the workshops, participants were also provided with life-skill related materials which can be used as the basis for future training at their institutions.



The workshops were undertaken by SEAMEO RETRAC resource persons and visiting facilitators from other institutions in Ho Chi Minh City. The whole course (consisting of 3 modules) had the attendance of 45 participants from universities, colleges and professional secondary schools in HCMC and Mekong Delta.



MOU Signing with University of Ballarat, Australia



On March 19, 2012, SEAMEO RETRAC signed an MOU with University of Ballarat, Australia, at the Center.



In attendance were leaders and senior staff of the two institutions. The MOU will pave the way for the joint training and research in the future.



International Conference on Going Global, UK



At the invitation of British Council, Dr. Ho Thanh My Phuong, SEAMEO RETRAC Acting Director, visited the United Kingdom to attend the international conference Going Global 2012 from March 13-15, 2012.


This year, the conference drew the participation of around 1,500 delegates from over 80 countries, making it the biggest ever forum for higher education leaders. Among them were more than 500 university presidents, vice-chancellors and sector leaders. At the conference, besides joining interesting sessions, Dr. Phuong presented a paper entitled “Empowering Women in Higher Education Leadership” in a panel discussion. The event was also a good opportunity for the Center to expand cooperation and partnership.



Closing Ceremony for the Training Course on English Teaching Methodology



SEAMEO RETRAC conducted a training course on English language teaching methodology for 24 English teachers of People’s Police Colleges and Academies from 03-14 April, 2012.


The course aimed at providing and updating the participants with the contemporary English language teaching practices and methodology, enhancing their classroom management skills  as well as developing their skills in applying available technologies  in their language teaching.  After 2 weeks of intensive studying, all the course participants have successfully completed the program and were granted the certificates of completion.





International Training Course in “Excellence in Educational Management and Leadership for Higher Education



From 09 -12 April 2012, SEAMEO RETRAC successfully conducted the international training course in educational management, namely “Excellence in Educational Management and Leadership for Higher Education”. Participants in the training course were 45 educational administrators who are Rectors/Vice Rectors, Directors/Deputy Directors, Deans/ Vice Deans from different universities and colleges in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam.

Experienced educational specialists and lecturers at SEAMEO RETRAC facilitated the training workshop. The content of the training course not only focused on educational management and leadership, but also facilitated and updated the participants with information and knowledge on the current trends in global higher education, students’ assessment, faculty appraisal, and evaluation and selection of instructional materials. The participants also visited HCMC University of Technical Education to learn more experience in educational leadership and management from this university.







Opening Ceremony of the Training Course on English Language Teaching Methodology


The training course on English language teaching methodology, jointly conducted by the Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security and SEAMEO RETRAC, started on April 03, 2012 at the Center.


This 2-week training course is organized for 24 English language teachers of People’s Police Colleges and Academies. The course aims at helping participants update the contemporary English language teaching practices and methodology, enhance their classroom management skills, and creatively apply technologies at their disposal in language teaching.
